Back in August, I mentioned that our show needed retooling.  I noticed that we had lost focus and that we were going to retool the show.  Since then, we’ve been working on the retooling efforts and it has taken far longer than I had expected.  With the holiday season in full swing, we’ve realized that we’re not going to be able to complete the retooling this year, but we will be continuing our work.

Next year, in mid-January, Another Voice will be back with new shows and a refreshed commitment to delivering you information, perspective and motivation to make a difference in our community.

Here’s a sneak peak of one of our first episodes of 2018.  The show’ll be entitled: “The kids are in the house…and Senate” and we’ll be introducing you to the State House packed with representatives full of hope and purpose.  You won’t want to miss it.

#LivePD, body cams, drug interdiction team and the Sheriff’s office’s new Internet Crimes Against Children Unit are just some of the issues that Sheriff Will Lewis discusses with me in our latest 2017 Public Servant Spotlight.  Sheriff Lewis shares how the reality of being the sheriff compares to his expectations of the job during the campaign and you might be surprised at what one thing disappoints him.  He takes time to discuss the programs or changes that he has been able to implement since becoming sheriff and how they are positively effecting the department and the community.  And he tells the most important thing that he and the deputies need from the public.

In the second half of the show, I talked about who and what we should honor or memorialize and made the case that it is not only ok to re-evaluate who we choose to honor, but it is necessary.

I would love to hear your thoughts on these issues.  Comment here or on our Facebook page.

William Timmons]]> http://canigetawordin.com/?p=5225 2017-05-16T17:08:38Z 2017-05-16T17:08:38Z Before the Primaries in 2016 for state and local offices, we ran a series of interviews of several of the candidates running.  We called it the 2016 Candidate Spotlight Series.  Several of those candidates we interviewed won election and we decided to check back in with those candidates as well as with some of our other elected officials in a series we’re calling the 2017 Public Servant Spotlight Series.

We’re asking the newly elected officials how the reality of the office they won compares to their expectations, what legislation or actions they are proud of accomplishing in their first few months in office, what they plan to attempt to attempt to accomplish going forward.

Our first Spotlight focuses on the freshman state senator for District 6, Sen. William Timmons.
The Senator talks about the challenges of the state senate, how even in defeat, he sees progress and some of the legislation he plan to introduce.  We also spent some time on the biggest piece of legislation coming out of this session; the Roads Bill.

If you would like to contact Sen. Timmons, here is his contact info:

Email: william@votetimmons.com
Legislature email: williamtimmons@scsenate.gov
Phone: 864-616-8821

Feel free to let the Senator know of your concerns and ideas.

We spent the first half of the show discussing our current Administration’s “tough guy” approach to foreign policy, from cruise missiles in Syria to the “Mother of All Bombs” in Afghanistan and sending an armada to one particular trouble spot.  All of these actions seem designed to send a message to a world leader most in the world describe as a lunatic, Kim Jung Un of North Korea.

We, then spent some time looking at President Trump’s tax proposals that are touted to be the biggest tax cut ever.

We closed out the show discussing the Legislature’s attempt at a roads bill that promises to be a reform bill and an effective fix for our roads, but really is neither.

“Other People Spending Your Money, Part 2: But I Like That Program!”

Our second segment: “This Governor Ain’t The Taxman!”
Governor McMaster weighs in decisively on the gas tax debate with a big NO!

Our final segment today: “The Council Sues Itself,” focused on 3 members of the Greenville County Council suing the entire council for breaking their own rules.

Paton is looking to create an independent path to represent us for the 4th Congressional District House of Representatives.   Greenville News covered the event as well.

We then checked out freshman state senator, William Timmon’s well reasoned and reasonable plan for fixing our roads here in SC.  In this Greenville Journal article, Sen. Timmon lays out a 3 step plan that just might work.  Check out his plan here and encourage your senators to support it.

Finally, we took some time to examine President Trump’s Budget that he sent to Congress last week.
You can check the full text of his budget here, thanks to NPR.

We appreciate Sen. Graham providing us an opportunity to express our views to him, even if many of those view disagree with him.

On the second half of the show, we focused on legislation the SC House passed that affect our traveling:
The gas tax bill

And legislation authorizing SC to comply with The Real ID Act passed and signed into U.S. law in 2005.

We praised all the folks taking an active role in addressing their elected officials.

We, then, turned our attention to our state.
In a first for South Carolina, a committee hearing was held for legislation to legalize the use of medical marijuana

There are two major bills making their way through the SC House addressing our roads issues:

SC H 3516, that mainly addresses increasing funding and
SC H 3703, that mainly addresses real reform for the Dept. of Transportation (We like this one)
