1 in 8 Americans struggle with hunger, 1 in 5 of those are children.  In Greenville County, 60,000 people don’t know where one of their meals today will come from.  More than 50,000 people in Greenville County live more than 1 mile from a grocery store and do not have a car.  It’s not just the homeless struggling with hunger either, many in need are single parent families with children.  Greenville is blessed with great charities, many of those relying heavily on the generosity of volunteers and donations from the public.   With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, the pantry shelves grow bare and the demand for help multiplies.  Here is where we come in.

The 2013 “Who Cares?” Food Drive will be collecting non-perishable food items beginning on Monday Oct. 14th until November 31st.

Here is a partial list of the items we are looking for:
* Canned meats
* Canned and boxed meals (soup, stew, mac & cheese)
* Peanut butter and other nut butters
* Canned or died beans and peas
* Pasta, rice, cereal
* Canned fruits and vegetables
*100% fruit or vegetable juices (canned, plastic or boxed)
* Dry milk
-Healthy, low-fat and low sugar products are preferred

Currently, we have 7 drop off locations, thanks to some great local businesses:

* Little Pigs BBQ @ Hudson Corner:   2428 Hudson Rd, Greer
* Jane Crawford Skin Clinic: 405 The Parkway, Greer
* Stomping Grounds Coffee and Wine Bar: 208 Trade Street, Greer
* Blueberry Frog:  215 Pelham Rd. Greenville
* WOLI 105.7 FM/910 AM Studios, McAlister Square, Greenville

* Mad Cuban Cafe 699 Fairview Rd #C Simpsonville
* Personal Defense Outfitter: 12 S. Main St. Travelers Rest

We really appreciate these local businesses that are joining us in feeding the hungry!    We will be adding more locations as the Drive continues.
If your business would like to host a collection box, please email us at av@canigetawordin.com

We want to encourage folks to donate and to acknowledge those who participate, so we’re asking that you take some photos when you drop off some food and then either email it to us at av@canigetawordin.com  or simply post it to our Facebook page here

Make sure you keep checking the website and the FB page, to see your photos and everyone else’s.  Some of the pictures will find their way on Loaves and Fishes and Southern Starr Promotions pages and maybe even other media outlets.  So let’s see whose being active in their community.

There are other ways you can be involved.

* Competitions
-We are going to have some fun with the Drive.  We are going to see who “cares more, ”
-Which political party “cares more?”  During the week of Nov. 3rd-9th, we’ll be challenging Democrats, Republicans, Greenies, and Independents to show which party “cares” more”
by filling the boxes to overflowing.
-Prior to the BIG GAME, for two weeks, Nov. 17-30, we’re challenging Clemson and Carolina fans to prove which college’s fans “care” the most.

Do you have a competition that you think we ought to encourage?  Leave us a comment down in the comment sections.
Do you work for a business with lots of employees, departments, floors, branches,  you could encourage a competition within your company.  Windstream Communications is doing this and we expect great things.

* Cash Mobs
-A Cash Mob is an organized gathering of folks to support a local business by patronizing that business at the same time.  We are going to have a few of these for some of the businesses that host collection boxes.  Our first Cash Mob is going to be Oct. 22nd from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm at Little Pigs at Hudson Corner.  Join us and support a local business supporting local charities.  If you bring 2 non-perishable food items, you’ll get your drink for free.

Be on the lookout for future cash mobs.

The time to act is now and  if you and I, then who?  Join us in feeding the hungry!
