My Leap Day, 2012

A bustling kitchen full of eager volunteers and a beautiful, modern assisted living facility’s sitting room as seniors gathered were the setting for my two Leap Day volunteering opportunities.

My first stop of the day was at the Bi-Lo near my house to “rescue” some delicious looking baked goods: pies, cakes, cup cakes and a various assortment of breads.  I love the expression “rescuing food,” probably because I LOVE food and the thought that I was saving food for someone else to enjoy is satisfying.  It took mere minutes to take the grocery cart of goodies and load it into my van, then I was off to the Greer Soup Kitchen, where I found a busy kitchen prepping lunch. Leap Day, Eric’s day

I’ll be starting my Leap Day “rescuing” food from a Taylors grocery store
and delivering it to a Greer Soup kitchen working with the folks at
Loaves and Fishes of Greenville.  http://www.loavesandfishesgreenville.com/

Working through Hands on Greenville, I’ll spend an hour
in the afternoon with the folks at Homewood Residence talking about current affairs.

And I’ll close out my Leap Day with my mom serving dinner at the Greenville Rescue Mission.

Let’s hear how you will be spending a couple of those bonus hours on Feb. 29th.  I know Jason is planning to help out at the Human Society.  With one week left, we are still a little shy of our 100 people goal, so join us and let us know what you are planning.  Now, we realize that you may not have time on a Wednesday, so could always volunteer this Saturday instead.  Either way, let’s help others!

Show Recap: Leap Day and a War on Religion

Interview with the Project Coordinator for Hands on Greenville, Brooke Jones, about the myriad of volunteer opportunities they offer.  They are a great place to look for something to do on Leap Day.

We shed light on the so-called “war on religion” that the Right has labeled the Administration’s implementation of part of the Affordable Care Act.  Adding contraceptives and sterilization to the list of preventative measures that employers must cover if they provide insurance for  their employees has Catholics up in arms; allowing partisans on the Right to claim there is a war on religion.

Leap Day, a free day to help others

This year, we all get an extra 24 hours, a free day.  2012 is Leap Year, so February adds a day, Feb. 29th.

We, at Another Voice with Jason and Eric invite you to join us on Feb. 29 as we celebrate this bonus day by helping others.

Charity and volunteerism are as American as apple pie, but the hectic pace most of us lead squeezes our time so tightly, that helping others falls by the wayside.  Let’s change that, if even only for one day.

On Feb. 29th, Leap Day, do something to help someone else out.  It can be anything from serving food at a soup kitchen to picking up trash along the highway; from volunteering at the Humane Society to giving blood.  You could donate to the Salvation Army or the Wounded Warriors.  There are so many ways we can help others, just pick one and help out.

Throughout the month of February, we will be giving suggestions and providing contact information to charities and volunteer opportunities.  Look for a tab at the top of this page to find options.  Please also go to our Facebook page @Another Voice with Jason and Eric, and follow the Leap Day event there.  We want to hear what you decide to do.

Remember, together, we can make a difference.  So see you on Leap Day.
